Goosen romps in World Match Play

SURREY, England, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- Retief Goosen overwhelmed Jeff Maggert in record fashion Thursday in the first round of the rain-marred World Match Play Championship.

Goosen played the first 18 holes of his 36-hole match in 7-under and defeated Maggert, 12 & 11. That broke the record for the tournament's most one-sided match, which had been Mark O'Meara's 11 & 10 win over Vijay Singh in 1998.

The other seven matches were suspended by darkness after heavy rains forced a 2 1/2-hour delay at the start of play.

Ernie Els was 2-up with two to play against Scott Drummond when darkness fell while Angel Cabrera was 1-up with three to go against K.J. Choi.

Chris Riley was all square with Padraig Harrington with four holes left and Thomas Levet was even with Mike Weir with four holes remaining.

Lee Westwood had a 3-up lead with seven holes to play against Todd Hamilton and Steve Flesch was all square with Miguel Angel Jimenez through 26 holes.
