Steelers' linebacker sidelined by hernia

PITTSBURGH, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Kendrell Bell is expected to be out of action at least two more weeks after being diagnosed with a hernia.

Bell, who has been out with what the team thought was a groin injury, got the verdict Tuesday. He will undergo a laproscopic operation on Wednesday.

"The time frame for this is that he will definitely be out the next couple of weeks and then we have the bye week," said Steelers Coach Bill Cowher. "Then we will see where he is at that point."

The 2001 NFL defensive rookie of the year missed the final three preseason games with the shoulder problem before his latest injury.

"I would not say there has been any kind of misdiagnosis," said Cowher. "I think these are very hard things to diagnose. We tried to use a very conservative approach with him by shutting him down and trying to bring him back slowly."
