FONTANA, Calif., Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Adrian Fernandez won Sunday's Toyota Indy 400, finishing 0.0183 seconds ahead of Tony Kanaan, who clinched the 2004 IndyCar Series title.

Kanaan only needed to finish fourth to clinch the title, but he gave Fernandez a battle for the win despite starting from the back of the field.

Fernandez, a former Champ Car driver and owner, was second to Kanaan as the drivers were preparing to restart the race on lap 199 of 200. They were side-by-side down the backstretch before Fernandez nosed ahead exiting the final turn.

The victory was Fernandez's second in a row and third of the season.

Dan Wheldon, Sam Hornish Jr. and Buddy Rice completed the top-five.
