MLB: Tampa Bay 4, Detroit 1

DETROIT, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Rob Bell threw a complete game Friday night and Rocco Baldelli hit a home run as Tampa Bay defeated Detroit, 4-1.

The Devil Rays ensured they would not finish last in the American League East.

Bell (8-8) gave up four hits and Detroit's only run came in the ninth. Tampa Bay has built an insurmountable lead for fourth place over Toronto. It marks the first time since Tampa Bay entered the American League in 1998 that it will not finish last in the division.

Detroit catcher Ivan Rodriguez recorded his 1,000th career RBI with a double in the ninth.
