Players' union files against suspension

ARLINGTON, Texas, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- The Players' Association filed a grievance Monday against Anaheim for suspending outfielder Jose Guillen without pay for the rest of the season.

Guillen heard of the suspension after taking batting practice before Sunday night's game against Oakland.

He was suspended for his actions after being lifted for a pinch-runner in Saturday's win over Oakland. Guillen was irate in the dugout and apparently his actions rubbed the Angels' management the wrong way.

"It's a tough situation," said Anaheim Manager Mike Scioscia on the Guillen suspension after Sunday night's game. "I didn't sleep at all last night thinking about it. Jose is an emotional guy, he understands he has crossed the line. I think the suspension was needed. It wasn't just Saturday's action."

The case will now go in front of an arbitrator in Oakland on Friday.

Guillen was hitting .294 with 27 homers and 104 RBI at the time of the suspension.
