COL FB: Florida State 34, UAB 7

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Leon Washington rushed for 104 yards and a touchdown Saturday as eighth-ranked Florida State posted a 34-7 victory over UA-Birmingham.

The Seminoles (1-1) rebounded from a 16-10 overtime defeat to fifth-ranked Miami-Florida last week.

Florida State piled up 489 yards of offense, 251 rushing, while its defense held the Blazers to minus 24 rushing yards and recorded eight sacks.

Seminoles quarterback Chris Rix threw for 191 yards on 18-of-29 passing and ran for 42 more and a touchdown, while Lorenzo Booker totaled 71 yards on the ground.

UAB (1-1), which opened the year with a 56-14 win over Baylor on Sept. 4, managed just 144 total yards.

Washington raced 48 yards to the UAB six-yard line on the second play from scrimmage. Rix scored on a one-yard sneak to give the Seminoles a 7-0 lead less than two minutes after the opening kickoff.
