BOSTON, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- After a game brawl in 1958 led games to be moved to daytime, Boston officials are letting high schools return to the Friday night football tradition.

Saying the games strengthen the bonds of communities, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino said weekends in the city will again begin with high school football games.

"This is about building relationships between different kids from different neighborhoods. Getting them to understand each other, work with each other, pay against each other because become friends with one another," Menino said, the Boston Globe reported Wednesday.

The first symbolic game will be Friday, pitting Roxbury's O'Bryant School of Mathematics and Science against the South Boston Education Complex. Menino planned to be on hand to participate in the opening coin toss. The city is easing into the tradition, however, just three games are scheduled for nighttime play this season.

Friday night games have been banned in Boston since 1958 when an exhibition between many teams from Boston disintegrated into a brawl.
