LANDOVER, Md., Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Clinton Portis ran for a 64-yard touchdown Sunday to help Washington beat Tampa Bay 16-10.

John Hall kicked three field goals for the Redskins.

The victory made Hall of Famer Joe Gibbs a winner in his return as the team's coach after a 12-year retirement.

Portis, obtained in an off-season trade with Denver, sprinted for his long touchdown in the first quarter on his first carry for his new team. He finished with 149 yards rushing on 29 attempts.

An improved Washington defense, guided by former Buffalo Bills Coach Greg Williams, held the Buccaneers to under 200 total yards.
