DENVER, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Brian Giles' second homer of the game broke an eighth-inning tie and the San Diego Padres erupted with a 12-run ninth Sunday to rout Colorado, 15-2

Giles added a three-run homer while Sean Burroughs and Phil Nevin each had three hits and three RBI for the Padres.

Jake Peavy (12-5) gave up two runs on seven hits in eight innings for the win. He struck out eight with one walk.

Todd Helton hit a homer and Jeromy Burnitz added an RBI for the Rockies.

With the score 2-2, Giles hit a 2-1 pitch deep over the right field wall to stake San Diego to a 3-2 lead in the eighth.

Colorado starter Jamey Wright worked the first seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits.
