OAKVILLE, Ontario, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- Mike Weir of Canada fired a 6-under 65 Friday to take the second-round lead at the Canadian Open.

Play was suspended because of darkness after five hours of action were lost Thursday because of heavy rains.

Weir had a 36-hole total 9-under 133, one shot better than newly-crowned world No. 1 Vijay Singh.

Singh completed his first round early Friday and shot a 28 on the back nine to overcome a poor start. He then shot a 66 in the second round to reach 134.

The players unable to complete the second round will return early Saturday, after which the cut will made and the third round will be played.

Craig Barlow stood at 6-under 136 while Jesper Parnevik and Pat Perez were both at 6-under through 13 holes.

Weir is trying to become the first Canadian to win his national championship since Pat Fletcher in 1954.

"I do have to watch myself because it's easy to get excited," Weir said. "The crowd is fantastic and really pulling for me."
