Carpentier wins pole in Monterey

MONTEREY, Calif., Sept. 10 (UPI) -- Defending champion Patrick Carpentier had the fastest time Friday in provisional qualifying for Sunday's Grand Prix of Monterey Champ Car race.

Carpentier turned in a time of one minute, 9.918 seconds around the 2.238-mile course. He is guaranteed a front row spot for the race and one championship point.

Series points leader Sebastien Bourdais was second in 1:10.130, followed by Paul Tracy (1:10.214), Alex Tagliani (1:10.383) and Bruno Junqueira (1:10.392).
