Vikings sign 44-year-old Morten Andersen

MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- The Minnesota Vikings Tuesday signed 44-year-old kicker Morten Andersen, the second leading scorer in National Football League history.

Andersen, a seven-time Pro Bowler going into his 23rd NFL season, was released last week by the Kansas City Chiefs. He played previously for the New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Falcons and New York Giants.

The Vikings released kicker Brett Conway, who had signed with them in the off-season.

Andersen has kicked 502 field goals and scored 2,259 points, second to former Vikings' kicker Gary Anderson who has totaled 2,346 points.

If Andersen appears in three games, he will break George's Blanda's NFL record of 340 games played.

Andersen started in the NFL in 1982 before two Viking rookies -- Nat Dorsey and Kenechi Udeze -- were born.

Conway, 29, is a seven-year NFL veteran who has played for Green Bay, Washington and the Giants.
