CHICAGO, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- The Chicago Fire posted a 3-1 victory over Eastern Conference foe D.C. United Saturday night at Soldier Field.

Justin Mapp and Kelly Gray scored for the Fire. Chicago's first goal was the result of a run into the right side of the D.C. goal by Mapp. He fired a sliding cross towards the middle, where it was deflected by D.C.'s Ryan Nelsen into his own goal past a diving Troy Perkins.

D.C. drew a rebound goal in by forward Earnie Stewart. The Fire's goalkeeper made a diving save on a shot by midfielder Josh Gros, but the rebound went directly to Stewart, who aimed at the lower right-hand corner of the Fire goal.

Chicago took the 3-1 lead, on a goal by Gray, with assists by midfielders Logan Pause and Scott Buete.
