Roddick, playing in a late-night match, defeated 18-year-old Rafael Nadal, 6-0, 6-3, 6-4. Roddick produced a serve in the first set that measured 152 miles per hour, tying his U.S. Open record.

"I played really well for the first two sets, then kind of had a concentration lapse in the third," Roddick said. "I don't feel unbeatable, but I feel like I'm playing pretty good tennis."

Hewitt, who won this title in 2001, posted a 7-6 (9-7), 6-1, 6-2 victory over Moroccan Hicham Arazi in a second-round match. Hewitt has won 12 straight and 17 of his last 18 matches on the tour.

Meanwhile, Ferrero struggled all afternoon against Stefan Koubek, finally falling to the Austrian, 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 6-3 victory.
