Yankee slugger Giambi has benign tumor

NEW YORK, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- The New York Daily News reports that Yankee first baseman Jason Giambi has been getting steroid treatment for a benign tumor in his pituitary.

The newspaper cites sources who said that Major League Baseball approved the treatment, which involves steroids that will not give Giambi a playing boost.

"It's fine for a specific medical use," one official told the Daily News. "He isn't breaking any rules."

Sources said that Giambi hid his condition because of recent scandals about athletes' use of performance-enhancing drugs.

Giambi has suffered from a series of health problems this year. Manager Joe Torre expects him to be back in the lineup next year, and the team is to decide soon whether he can return as a designated hitter this year.
