Urbina's mother kidnapped in Venezuela

DETROIT, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- The Detroit Tigers announced Thursday that closer Ugueth Urbina had returned to his native Venezuela following the kidnapping of his mother.

Four men disguised as police officers took Maura Villareal from a house owned by Urbina in suburban Caracas on Wednesday. The kidnappers have not yet contacted members of the Urbina family, according to reports from Venezuela.

"The Detroit Tigers organization is working with Major League Baseball and its contacts in Venezuela to assist Ugueth," the team said in a statement.

Urbina, who left the World Series champion Florida Marlins to sign with the Tigers this season, is 4-6 with a 4.50 ERA and 21 saves.
