Cardinals place Shipp on IR

TEMPE, Ariz., Sept. 2 (UPI) -- The Arizona Cardinals have placed running back Marcel Shipp on the injured reserve list because of a broken left leg, ending his 2004 season.

Originally, team doctors thought Shipp -- who gained a team-high 834 rushing yards in 2003 while sharing playing time with Emmitt Smith -- would miss two months.

Shipp suffered the injury during an intrasquad scrimmage Aug. 6 when he was pinned under a pile on the artificial turf at the domed stadium at Northern Arizona University. He also suffered a fractured and dislocated left ankle on the play and had to carted off the field.

Shipp, in his fourth year, signed as an undrafted free agent in 2001 after a celebrated college career at Massachusetts. He celebrated his 26th birthday on Aug. 8.

In his career, Shipp has 1,664 yards rushing and six touchdowns and 68 pass receptions for 597 yards with three touchdowns.
