Agassi advances to third round

NEW YORK, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Andre Agassi advanced to the third round of the U.S. Open Thursday when Florian Mayer of Germany retired with a hamstring injury in the fourth set.

The sixth-seeded Agassi was ahead 7-5, 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 when Mayer was forced to quit. Mayer's retirement came after he played an almost perfect second set that appeared to give him a chance for the upset.
