White Sox release veteran reliever Jackson

CHICAGO, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- The Chicago White Sox released veteran relief pitcher Mike Jackson after Monday's makeup game against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Jackson, who ranks eighth all-time in pitching appearances with 1,005, was 2-0 with a 5.01 ERA in 45 appearances this season.

The 19-year veteran was signed to a minor league contract in spring training.

The White Sox needed to create a roster spot for a starting pitcher in light of Freddy Garcia's forearm injury. Garcia will be skipped in the rotation for the second straight time after he stopped a side session Sunday after only 15 pitches.

Righthander Felix Diaz was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte and will start Tuesday against Oakland, while Jason Grilli was pushed back a day to Wednesday.
