NAZARETH, Pa., Aug. 29 (UPI) -- Dan Wheldon captured Sunday's Firestone Indy 225 Sunday, leading Andretti teammates Tony Kanaan and Dario Franchitti to a one-two-three finish.
The victory, by 3.5553 seconds, was Wheldon's third of the season.
Sam Hornish Jr. was dominating the race at the midway point when he pitted on lap 146 following an Ed Carpenter crash. On the stop, he pulled out before the fuel hose was released and fuel sprayed everywhere igniting an invisible methanol fire throughout the pit. Hornish Jr. pulled away as everyone including owner Roger Penske was doused with water.
Hornish Jr. returned one lap later because the left side of his car was afire and it was extinguished, but his race for the win was over.
The final laps were relatively quiet as Wheldon and Kanaan didn't try anything to upset their positions. Franchitti held off Buddy Rice for third.
Rice and Helio Castroneves completed the top-five.
