Turley placed on IR

ST. LOUIS, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- St. Louis Rams offensive tackle Kyle Turley will miss the 2004 season after being placed on the injured reserve list Saturday.

Last month, the 6-5, 309-pounder suffered a herniated disc during a training camp practice. He underwent back surgery for a bulging disc during the off-season.

Turley was obtained from New Orleans after the 2002 season in exchange for a second-round draft pick. He signed a six-year, $31 million contract with St. Louis last year and started all 16 games for the Rams last season.

Turley, 29, a first-round draft choice by the Saints in 1998 out of San Diego State, received opinions from three different doctors on the need for more surgery.

The Rams also placed linebacker Jeremy Loyd on IR Saturday.

Loyd, who finished fourth on the team in 2003 with 18 special teams tackles, suffered a torn pectoral muscle during Friday night's 28-3 pre-season victory over Washington.
