NEW YORK, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas will miss the team's 2004 season opener after being suspended by the NBA for one game.

The 6-3 Arenas, arguably the team's best player, pled no contest to a misdemeanor charge of failing to maintain proper registration of a weapon while living in California in 2003. He was a member of Golden State at the time.

The Warriors drafted him during the second round in 2001 out of Arizona.

"While I had a valid registration in Arizona, I did not have a registration for California," Arenas said in a statement. "It was an oversight on my part, I have dealt with the situation and I'm moving forward."

Last season, Arenas averaged 19.6 points and 5.0 assists per contest in 55 games for the Wizards. He is about to begin the second of a six-year, $65 million contract.

The Wizards' opener is Nov. 3 at Memphis.
