ATHENS, Greece, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- The Olympics crashed to a conclusion for Marion Jones Friday with disappointments in both the long jump and 400-meter relay.
China, meanwhile, continued to show the depth of its athletic program with two track and field gold medals.
Jones, competing at these Games despite allegations she has used performance enhancing drugs, finished fifth in the long jump as that event was dominated by Russians.
She then was part of a botched baton pass in the relay, costing the Americans an almost certain gold medal. Lauryn Williams started too soon on the baton pass and by the time Jones could catch her, they were out of the zone and out of the race.
Jamaica won in 41.73, followed by Russia and France.
Russia swept the long jump with Tatyana Lebedeva earning the gold.
Liu Xiang of China won the 110-hurdles by equaling the world record of 12.91. American Terrence Trammel ran second.
China's Xing Huina then captured the women's 10,000 meters ahead of two Ethiopians.
The United States salvaged the evening when Timothy Mack and Toby Stevenson finished 1-2 in the pole vault.
