Orioles dump Karim Garcia

OAKLAND, Calif., Aug. 26 (UPI) -- The Baltimore Orioles late Wednesday released veteran outfielder Karim Garcia.

It was one of a number of roster moves made after the team's 3-0 loss at Oakland.

Garcia was acquired from the New York Mets for reliever Mike DeJean on July 19. He batted .212 in 23 games with three home runs and 11 RBI for Baltimore, and had two home runs and five RBI in his first game as an Oriole on July 20 against Kansas City.

He was relegated to a part-time starter recently, and was judged expendable when the team became flooded with left-handed bats. Team officials decided they wanted to see more of rookie Val Majewski in center field during the final five weeks of the season.

"They want to take a look at this kid and I understand that," Garcia said shortly after his release.

The Orioles also recalled infielder Jose Leon and outfielder Tim Raines Jr. from Triple-A Ottawa of the International League.
