Egypt ends gold medal drought of 56 years

ATHENS, Greece, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- Karam Ibrahim won Egypt's first Olympic gold medal in 56 years Thursday night, capturing the 96-kilogram class of Greco-Roman wrestling.

Egypt had not won any kind of medal in 20 years, but picked up two Thursday evening. In addition to Ibrahim's gold, Egypt claimed a bronze in taekwondo.

Ibrahim defeated Ramaz Nozadze of Georgia in the final. Mehmet Ozal of Turkey beat Masoud Hashemzadeh in the bronze medal match.

"I came here to win gold," Ibrahim said. "My friends, my family, everybody knew I came here for the gold medal. All the years I have worked so hard for it."

In the Greco-Roman 60-kilogram class, South Korea's Jung Ji Hyun won the gold medal by defeating Roberto Monzon of Cuba. Armen Nazarian of Bulgaria defeated Alexey Shevtsov in the bronze medal match.

At 74 kilograms, Alexandr Dokturishivili of Uzbekistan defeated Marko Yli-Hannuksela of Finland for the gold. Varteres Samourgachev of Russia beat Reto Bucher of Switzerland to win the bronze.
