Report: Player's unhappiness shocked coach

MANHATTAN, Kan., Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Kansas State basketball coach Jim Woolridge told a local newspaper he had "no idea" point guard Dez Willingham was unhappy as a Wildcat.

The Manhattan (Kan.) Mercury News reported Wednesday Woolridge said he was told last week Willingham likely will not return to the Big 12 school. He said Willingham's father, Kenneth, said during an Aug. 15 phone call it was doubtful his son would be returning to Manhattan.

"Dez had played for me for a year and I really felt like we had a good relationship, and that he had a good relationship with other members of our coaching staff," Wooldridge told the newspaper. "But in the end, it was Dez wanting to stay close to mom and dad."

The DeSoto, Texas, native averaged 4.4 points and 2.8 assists per contest last season while playing in 22 games.

He missed the start of classes at the school last Wednesday.
