USA clinches a boxing medal

ATHENS, Greece, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Andre Ward made sure the United States would win at least one boxing medal at the Olympics Tuesday with a quarterfinal victory.

Ward, a light-heavyweight, has not lost a bout in six years and he reached the semifinals with a 23-16 victory over two-time world champion Evgeny Makarenko of Russia.

Semifinalists in the Olympic boxing competition are guaranteed of no worse then a bronze medal.
