ATHENS, Greece, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- The first medal ever awarded in women's Olympic wrestling was claimed Monday night by American Patricia Miranda.
Miranda captured the bronze in the 48-kilogram class. Teammate Sara McMann later won a silver at 63 kilograms.
Women's wrestling was put into the Olympics this year at the expense of one weight class each in men's wrestling, Greco-Roman wrestling and boxing.
Four classifications were contested with Irini Merlini of the Ukraine (48kg), Saori Yoshida of Japan (55kg), Japan's Kaori Icho (63kg) and Wang Xu of China (72kg) winning the gold medals.
The honor of winning the first medal, however, went to Miranda, who defeated France's Angelique Berthenet, 12-4, in the bronze medal match. Miranda lost her semifinal to Merlini, a three-time world champion.
