ATHENS, Greece, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- Three American beach volleyball squads earned berths in the Olympic quarterfinals Saturday.
The top-seeded women's team of Kerri Walsh and Misty May, the reigning world champions, recorded a 21-11, 21-18 victory over China's Tian Jia and Wang Fei.
"We played extremely well in the first set tonight," May said. "We jumped out to a quick lead in the second set and started to relax a little. The Chinese are a very good team that did not quit. We had something left at the end as they started to struggle when they took the lead late."
Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs earned a berth in the quarters earlier with a 21-16, 21-16 win over Eva Celbova and Sona Novakova of the Czech Republic.
The U.S. men's team of Dax Holdren and Stein Metzger defeated Germany's Markus Dieckmann and Jonas Reckermann, 21-16, 19-21, 15-13.
