Softball team shutout streak continues

ATHENS, Greece, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Cat Osterman struck out 10 batters and Crystl Bustos homered Friday as the U.S. Olympic softball team finished group play with 3-0 win over Taiwan.

Yukiko Ueno, meanwhile, threw the first perfect game in the eight-year history of Olympic softball to give Japan a 2-0 win over China. Ueno struck out nine batters to put Japan in the semifinals.

China reached the semifinals despite the loss. Australia will fill out the Final Four.

The Americans did not give up a run during the seven-game round-robin portion of the tournament, outscoring opponents 41-0.

Osterman allowed one hit and walked four through six innings, after which Lori Harrigan came in to pitch the final frame.

The game was scoreless into the fourth, but Bustos led off the inning with a home run to center.

It was the 77th straight win for the U.S. national team.

China and Japan will meet again in the semifinals Sunday. The United States will play Australia with the winner moving into the gold medal game. The loser of that game will take on the China-Japan winner for a spot in the gold medal contest.
