Records fall in Olympic cycling

ATHENS, Greece, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Track cyclists Anna Meares of Australia and Chris Hoy of Great Britain won time trial gold medals Friday in record fasion.

Meares won the women's 500-meter time trial with a world record of 33.952 seconds. Previous world record holder Jiang Yonghua of China finished second and Natallia Tsylinskaya of Belarus took the bronze.

"I was looking for a personal best time," Meares said. "I never dreamed of breaking the world record. It is unexpected and unbelievable.

Jiang also finished second to Meares at the world championships.

Hoy set an Olympic record in the men's one-kilometer time trial with a 1:00.711. Arnaud Tournant of France took the silver and Stefan Nimke of Germany the bronze.
