American wins shooting gold

ATHENS, Greece, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- American Matt Emmons won the Olympic gold medal in the men's prone rifle event Friday, the United States' second shooting victory at the Games.

Emmons, 23, a four-time NCAA rifle team champion at Alaska-Fairbanks, had a score of 703.3 -- 1.1 points better than Christian Lusch of Germany.

The bronze went to Sergei Martynov of Belarus with aq score of 701.6.

An FBI firearms instructor introduced Emmons to shooting and he won the world championship in this event two years ago.

He joined Kimberly Rhode as American shooting gold medallists in Athens. Rhode won the women's double trap.

Emmons became the first USA winner of this event since Edward Etzel in 1984. No American had medaled in the competition since then.

Also Friday, Russian Lioubov Galkina set a final Olympic record in winning the women's 50-meter rifle three-position event. Galkina won a silver medal earlier in these Games in air rifle.

Galkina's final score of 688.4 eclipsed the old record, set by Aleksandra Ivosev of Yugoslavia in 1996.

The silver went to Valentina Turisini of Italy and the bronze to Wang Chengyi of China.
