USC No. 1 tailback suspended

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Hershel Dennis, expected to start at tailback for Southern California this season, has been suspended indefinitely for disciplinary reasons.

The Los Angeles Daily News reported that Coach Pete Carroll levied the suspension as a result of a party Sunday night near the university where an alleged sexual assault took place.

The alleged victim, a female friend of Dennis, reportedly told police Dennis was at the party but has not formally accused him of sexually assaulting her, the report said.

She also identified a pair of other players at the apartment where the incident allegedly occurred, but did not accuse them of wrongdoing, a source close to the investigation said.

Part of Dennis' suspension was due to the fact that he broke curfew.

"It's indefinite," Carroll said of the suspension. "That's a word that you would use in this case. I haven't really labeled it."
