KANSAS CITY, Mo., Aug. 18 (UPI) -- The family of former Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Derrick Thomas Tuesday lost its lawsuit against the team.
Thomas, who was a nine-time Pro Bowl choice, died from injuries he suffered in a motor vehicle accident Jan. 23, 2000. In the rollover accident, the roof of his 1999 Chevy Suburban was crushed and Thomas, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown clear.
His family had contended that it was too weak, and had blamed the General Motors Corp.
GM was being sued for more than $100 million.
The police report of the accident said Thomas was driving too fast for the poor road conditions. The Kansas City Star reported Wednesday a 12-member Jackson County, Mo., jury found Thomas was entirely at fault.
The newspaper said he broke his back after flying about 50 feet onto the pavement.
"I'm disappointed, because I felt so strongly about the rollovers," Thomas' mother, Edith Morgan, told reporters.
