Grambling legend enjoying visitors

GRAMBLING, La., Aug. 18 (UPI) -- The most successful college football coach in history, Grambling's Eddie Robinson, still greets visitors despite suffering from memory loss and weakness.

When Robinson, now 85, retired in 1997 he had won more college games than anyone else, sent more than 200 players to the National Football League and put black college football on the map, the New Orleans Times Picayune reported Wednesday.

These days he still welcomes callers at his modest home where his wife of 65 years and son, Eddie Jr., care for him.

The legendary coach is suffering from a debilitating condition that doctors believe is most likely Alzheimer's disease, although the family has been told that it might be damage to nerve endings caused by the severe arthritis in his spine or damage caused by an undetected stroke.

"He weaves in and out," said Grambling trainer Ricky McCall, who divides his duties at the school with attending to the needs of his former boss and his wife.

"You have to talk to him in a lot more general way than you did a few months ago. But he enjoys being around people."
