
MASON, Ohio, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- Third-seeded Amy Frazier and fourth-seeded Marion Bartoli of France posted straight-set wins Wednesday in the first Western & Southern Women's Tennis Open.
Frazier defeated fellow American Mashona Washington 6-4, 6-3 and will next take on Tunisian Selima Sfar in the quarterfinals. Sfar rallied to oust eighth- seeded German Marlene Weingartner 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
Bartoli advanced to the round of eight with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Italian Mara Santangelo.
In other opening-round action, last week's Sopot titlist, seventh-seeded Italian Flavia Pennetta, topped American Teryn Ashley 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 and last week's Vancouver runner-up, American Laura Granville, edged out Czech Sandra Kleinova 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Up next for the red-hot Pennetta will be fellow Italian Rita Grande, while Granville will encounter fifth-seeded Czech Denisa Chladkova.
