Guardado expected to undergo surgery

SEATTLE, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Eddie Guardado, Seattle Mariners closer, had it confirmed Monday that he has a torn left rotator cuff and will likely undergo surgery.

He is expected to be sideline for 8-to-12 months.

Guardado was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Aug. 3 with fatigue in his shoulder. The two-time All-Star posted 18 saves along with a 2-2 record and a 2.78 ERA in 41 appearances this year.

Guardado, 33, has compiled 134 career saves in 12 major league seasons. He signed with the Mariners as a free agent in the offseason after spending his first 11 years with Minnesota.
