ATHENS, Greece, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- Sunday's highlights from the Olympics:

-- American NBA stars suffered their first loss ever in the Olympics, 92-73 to Puerto Rico. A gold medal is still a possibility for the Americans, but not with the kind of effort shown Sunday.

-- Michael Phelps' bid for eight Olympic gold medals ended when the U.S. 400-meter freestyle relay team could manage only a bronze. South Africa finished first in the race and the Netherlands second.

-- Carly Patterson of the United States recorded the best individual score in gymnastics qualifying while the U.S. team was second behind Romania.

-- Andy Roddick and Venus Williams both advanced past the first round of the tennis tournament.

-- Poland shocked defending champion Serbia-Montenegro in the opening game of men's volleyball. Poland won in straight sets.

-- The 38 medals awarded Sunday were divided among 22 countries. France led the way with four, including a gold by Laure Manaudou in the 400-meter freestyle. The United States, China and Australia all had eight medals, although only one of the U.S. medals was gold.
