Johnson gets pole in Glen Nextel race

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y., Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Jimmie Johnson won the pole for Sunday's Watkins Clen Nextel Cup race on points Friday when qualifying was cancelled due to bad weather.

Jeff Gordon, who holds the Nextel Cup qualifying record at Watkins Glen, with a lap of 70.798 seconds (124.580 m.p.h.), will start on the outside of the front row with his Hendrick Motorsports teammate.

Gordon also leads all drivers each with four Watkins Glen victories. Mark Martin has three victories, followed by Rusty Wallace and Ricky Rudd with two each.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Tony Stewart will start in row two. Kyle Petty will make his 700th Nextel Cup start.
