TAMPA, Fla., Aug. 11 (UPI) -- New York Yankees slugger Jason Giambi, recently diagnosed with a benign tumor, said Wednesday he hopes to return to play before the end of the season.
Giambi, 33, is at the Yankees' training complex in Tampa.
Doctors found the tumor July 30. Giambi would not give details about the tumor or his treatment.
"It's been a pretty traumatic experience, for myself and my family," he said.
"I've finally gotten some clearance to start working out. I'm excited because the last couple of weeks I was a lab rat. I'm excited to get some baseball activities and get back before the end of the year."
The Yankees' first baseman hasn't played since July 23.
Tony Clark and John Olerud have played first base for the Yankees since Giambi left.
