Jansen was hurt in the Redskins' 20-17 win Monday night over the Denver Broncos in Canton, Ohio. Team officials said it was premature to call it a season-ending injury.

"I knew exactly what happened when it happened," Jansen said Tuesday. "There wasn't anybody around me. I just turned to run downfield and it just popped. It felt like somebody kicked me right in the back of the ankle.

Jansen has made 80 consecutive starts.

"I've never had to be helped off the field and I've never missed a practice," he said. "It's disappointing and frustrating."

Surgery was recommended during a visit Monday with Dr. James Andrews, an orthopedic surgeon in Birmingham, Ala.

"We were afraid it was going to go that way and in fact it did," Coach Jeff Fisher told the newspaper.

Sirmon was injured in a non-contact drill last week. He was a fourth-round pick out of Oregon by the Titans in 2000. He had seven tackles and one forced fumble in 14 games last season and was due to start at right linebacker this season.
