Panthers' Adam Meadows retires

SPARTANBURG, S.C., Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Carolina Panthers offensive tackle Adam Meadows has retired because of continuing shoulder pain, Coach John Fox said Monday.

The 6-5, 290-pound Meadows, who was a second-round pick by Indianapolis in the 1997 draft out of Georgia, signed with the Panthers as a free agent during the off-season.

The Charlotte Observer reported that Meadows missed most of training camp because of the injury, and team officials said he decided his health would be an issue all season and might hamper the team.

"He came in here and he gave it his best," Fox said. "That thing (shoulder) flared up. He really had two avenues to go. There is a process where you can work with it or you walk away from it. He is one of very few who would do it the way he did, and I have a lot of respect for that."

Melvin Tuten and Matt Willig will split time at Meadows' right tackle spot.
