Panthers' Meadows says he's retiring

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Carolina Panthers veteran offensive right tackle Adam Meadows announced Monday is retiring from the NFL.

Meadows, 30,signed a five-year, $15 million contract with Carolina as a free agent on March 9, but had missed most of training camp due to shoulder problems.

The Panthers had hoped Meadows would undergo treatment for arthritis in the shoulder, but instead he decided to retire.

Meadows, who spent his first seven NFL seasons with Indianapolis, agreed to pay back his entire $2.5 million signing bonus.
