Giambi on DL with benign tumor

NEW YORK, July 30 (UPI) -- New York Yankees first baseman Jason Giambi was placed on the disabled list Friday with what doctors said was a benign tumor.

The Yankees had previously said Giambi had been diagnosed with an intestinal parasite. But tests have continued and there had been report that Giambi was suffering from a dangerous parasite that could poison the intestinal lining.

"The testing has not revealed the presence of any infectious disease," team physician Dr. Stuart Hershon said. "The Yankees expect that, with appropriate treatment, he will rejoin the team as soon as possible."

Giambi had complained of weakness during the past few weeks.

"I am relieved that they found something that is treatable and I look forward to getting well," Giambi said.
