Canas beats Volandri to win Croatia Open

UMAG, Croatia, July 25 (UPI) -- Guillermo Canas won the Croatia Open on Sunday with a two-set victory over Filippo Volandri of Italy.

Canes won his fifth career title by beating Volandri 7-5, 6-3. He has now won 11 straight matches, including his title run at the Mercedes Cup last week when he upset French Open champion Gaston Gaudio in an all-Argentine final.

Down 4-2 in the first set, Canes got a brief three-minute injury timeout due to back pain, but then came roaring back to win 16 of the next 18 points. This is the second straight year that Volandri has been runner-up in this tournament.

Canes got to the final with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez on Saturday, while Volandri tdefeated 1998 French Open champion Carlos Moya, 6-3, 6-2, on Saturday.
