Newman breaks Gordon's pole string

LOUDON, N.H., July 24 (UPI) -- Ryan Newman has the pole for Sunday's Siemens 300 Nextel Cup race at New Hampshire International, breaking Jeff Gordon's four-race pole win streak.

The No.12 Penske Dodge driver circled the 1.058-mile oval in 28.776 seconds (132.360 m.p.h.).

The pole victory was Newman's fourth of the season, third at NHIS and 22nd of his "Cup" career.

Starting on the front row with Newman will be the defending Siemens 300 champion Jimmie Johnson, who posted a second-best time of 28.858 seconds. Johnson swept both events in 2003 at NHIS, the first driver to accomplish the feat.

Twenty-four year old Martin Truex Jr. (28.929) and Michael Waltrip (28.967) will start in row two. Truex Jr. qualified the No.8 Budweiser Chevrolet of Dale Earnhardt Jr. because "Junior" has not fully recovered from last weekend's fiery practice crash at the Infineon Raceway.
