Verkerk, the 2003 French Open runner-up, won his second-career tournament title as he also won in Milan last year.

The 25-year-old Verkerk improved to 1-1 in ATP Tour singles final matches this season after previously losing to Nikolay Davydenko at Munich.

Gonzalez, who has dropped both lifetime meetings with Verkerk, was looking to win his second singles crown of the year and fifth of his career.
