STUTTGART, Germany, July 15 (UPI) -- Current French Open champion Gaston Gaudio of Argentina was forced to win twice Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the Mercedes Cup.
Gaudio fought off qualifier Hugo Armando 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) in a second-round match and then coasted past Tomas Berdych 6-2, 6-4.

Gaudio has won 13 of his last 14 matches. His next foe will be Jiri Novak, who recorded a 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-1 victory over Mikhail Youzhny on Thursday.
Among the surprises Thursday, Rafael Nadal ousted Juan Ignacio Chela, Nikolay Davydenko upset Andrei Pavel and Albert Costa outdueled Mariano Zabaleta.
