Long Beach State Pitcher wins Golden Spike

DURHAM, N.C., July 13 (UPI) -- Long Beach State pitcher Jered Weaver Tuesday was awarded the 2004 Golden Spikes Award as the nation's top amateur baseball player.

A unanimous first-team All-American, Weaver went 15-1 with a 1.62 ERA while striking out 213, leading the nation in both wins and strikeouts.

Weaver has also won the Dick Howser Award and received top honors from Baseball America and the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association. He also is a finalist for the Roger Clemens award.

"I never expected any of these awards to come, so to even be among the top five amateur players in the country, that's a very big honor," Weaver said.

The Anaheim Angels selected Weaver with the 12th overall pick in the June draft.
