U.S., Austria tied in Fed Cup quarters

INNSBRUCK, Austria, July 10 (UPI) -- Minus the big names, the United States managed a split Saturday in its Fed Cup quarterfinal match against host Austria.

Half the roster for the American squad is changed from the team that beat Slovenia, 4-1, in Portoroz in February. Serena and Venus Williams, Jennifer Capriati and Lindsay Davenport were unavailable for this tie.

Chanda Rubin, who replaced Venus, gave the Americans a 1-0 lead with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 victory over Barbara Schwartz. The 24th-ranked Rubin was coming off a first-round loss to France's Marion Bartoli at Wimbledon two weeks ago and has played sparingly this season due to injuries.

Lisa Raymond, who is playing singles and doubles for the second tie in a row, dropped her first singles match, 6-2, 6-4, to Barbara Schett, Austria's top player.

Sunday, Raymond will team with 47-year-old Martina Navratilova in the doubles.
